Lower limb amputations are carried out for a variety of reasons, including vascular disorders, consequences of injury, malignant tumours, infections, congenital deformities and accidents. However, the vast majority (80 percent) can be attributed to circulatory disorders of the arteries. Accompanying conditions such as diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure, and such factors as nicotine abuse, overweight and age also play a role.
